The Story of a Bookbinder

The importance of journaling has grown alongside with a passion for working with my hands. I have been pleased to develop my book binding into an art form based on well-researched ancient techniques, creating durable and meaningfully designed leather bound journals. As often as I can, I love to use upcycled garment leather, often appearing antiqued but in good condition and quite flexible for easy opening and closing. In other cases, I use quality vegetable tanned leather to be stamped, dyed, finished, or tooled. I am always seeking to incorporate old metal objects that fit with the book’s design.

Silence is often not readily available amidst the fast pace of accomplishment, school, general life. I have begun to hold more tightly to the importance of creating a space for silence. The name of my shop, Sylvan Bindery, has been inspired by the silence that the forest creates, clearing distractions, and connecting us with beauty. It is my hope that these blank pages, hand bound and personally created, create that kind of space.

As the years go on, I find more and more exciting purposes for books. Book journals, wine journals, letters from children to their mothers, life stories of fathers to their children, travel diaries to contain menus, grave rubbings and adventure stories, meditation journals, sketch books, music journals, sermon or lecture notes. As a person who needs compartments to sort information mentally, I have a book for almost every one of these things!

Whether words are toys, legacy, explanation, clarity, conviction, creation, or music, may these journals be a blank canvas for you as you wander into the forest and add to the beauty!
